Volunteer Opportunities in bklyn and queens with NY Cares in April
Prep Meals with Citymeals-on-Wheels in Williamsburg, BKLYN Saturday, April 13, 2019 9:00am - 12:00pm 12 SPOTS
Help to prepare or deliver hot nutritious meals to homebound seniors. Volunteers can choose between meal preparations in the kitchen or deliver the meals on foot in a group. Kitchen volunteer should:
• be comfortable using sharp objects such as knives
• be able to lift objects
• spend the entire project on their feet
Delivery volunteers should:
• Be able to walk for up to one hour
• walk up and down stairs
• Work as part of a team of 2 or 3 delivering meals

Help with this exciting new project with Sisters with Purpose in setting up their community farm for this upcoming season! Help needed planting vegetables and building raised beds.

It's Spring and Food First Garden in Red Hook is ready to start digging! We planted winter rye in the fall to restore nutrients to the soil of our raised beds and will need to work it into the soil. We will also pick up and distribute compost to all the beds in preparation for planting. If time allows, we will begin to plant cold weather crops. Get ready for a few hours of invigorating outdoor work! We look forward to your participation.
Assist The City Harvest Mobile Market - Queens II ASTORIA, QUEENS SATURDAY, APRIL 27 8:45 AM - 12:00 PM 6 SPOTS
Our New York Cares team will work alongside City Harvest volunteers in a greenmarket setting to sort, bag, and distribute 15-18,000 lbs of fresh produce to hundreds of families in need. Please dress accordingly and wear sturdy shoes. All projects are rain or shine! Volunteers should be prepared to work on their feet for the duration of the project (3 hours)

Help farmers grow fresh local produce for community members in need! New York Cares' Farm to Pantry program connects volunteers to local farms to food pantries in needful communities, striving to increase access to fresh produce throughout NYC. At East New York Farm, volunteers will work directly with professional farmers to assist with all farming aspects, from composting and weeding, to harvesting and processing crops to building benches and raised beds. Volunteers will also assist with produce distribution to community members in need, in partnership with CAMBA. All helpers will also have the opportunity to learn from farm staff both informally and through occasional workshops.

Provide much needed support for our public libraries. Sort Children's sections, shelve books, prepare reserve items, weed out old circulations and other general library assistance. All volunteers must be comfortable with alphabetization, bending, stretching, and light lifting. All volunteers new to BPL will need to complete a basic volunteer application on site the front desk.

Connect adults and seniors with basic computer skills. Work to develop their computer knowledge through the introduction of Microsoft Office Suite and internet browsing.
This project is part of National Volunteer Week, a volunteer recognition movement created by Points of Light and supported by New York Cares. As a volunteer on April 15-22, you continue to affirm that volunteers have the power to unlock the potential in New York City. SWIM MEET WITH NYC PARKS CITYWIDE AQUATICS 17 spots

QUEENS SUNDAY, APRIL 28 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM
Support young swimmers (ages 6-18) as they compete against others from all five boroughs. Serve as official timekeepers for the races and maybe even see the next Michael Phelps. No knowledge of swimming is required. An orientation will be provided at the beginning of the shift. Bring a bagged lunch to enjoy and wear flip flops, as street shoes are not permitted on the pool decks.

Volunteers will set up an LI Cares table outside the store, hand out lists of our most-needed items to customers as they enter the store, and collect donations as they leave. 6 volunteers needed per shift. volunteer age 18+ needed April 10th, 17th & 24th from 9:00am-12:00pm. Volunteer will: assist member agencies as they make selections from Gus’ Grocery fresh produce area; record distributions to agencies; & stock refrigerator with produce. Must be able to lift produce from pallet to refrigerator.

Group Volunteer in Warehouse in Hauppauge with Long Island Cares we can organize a day for nacli
Groups of up to 15 people can volunteer to sort and pack food for distribution. We schedule groups weekdays from either 10:00-12:00 (except Wednesdays) or 1:00-3:00. This is an ongoing event to schedule as needed. If you are interested, or have any questions, please let NACLI know.
